About SAH! A Film By Chandni
This film was born out of a deep desire to address and challenge the oppressive norms surrounding forced marriages and the LGBTQ+ experience in Indonesia. By portraying Putri and Rizqy’s journey, I wanted to explore the tension between cultural tradition and individual freedom, shedding light on the hidden struggles faced by a young bride who is pregnant and a gay man who was forced to marry. Through their story, I hope to inspire conversations and a deeper understanding of the need for personal autonomy and acceptance. Returning to Indonesia to create this film was both a challenge and a calling. I wanted to stay true to the cultural authenticity of my culture while tackling issues that are often considered taboo. By embracing elements of camp and queer theory, I sought to create a film that is bold, blending humor and drama to engage the audience in a meaningful dialogue about identity, love, and the courage to be oneself.

Synopsis
Putri, 17 and seven months pregnant, feels suffocated by societal expectations on her wedding day. Overwhelmed by a bleak future, she escapes in her wedding dress and jumps into the back of a catering truck driven by Rizqy, a gay man also trapped in an arranged marriage. Their spontaneous journey is filled with humour, tension, and moments of genuine human connection. Both begin to question the life choices and paths forced upon them. SAH! is a powerful exploration of the collision between tradition and individual freedom, challenging deep-rooted norms about love, identity, and the right to define one's destiny.
