Chandni (Ch444ndni) is an Indonesian visionary filmmaker and multimedia artist whose work thrives at the intersection of storytelling and experimentation. Born and raised in Jakarta, Indonesia, and now thriving in New York City, she masterfully directs, edits, designs, DJs, photographs, and creates across a multiverse of artistic mediums.
Primarily a filmmaker, her critically acclaimed short film SAH! reflects her fearless approach in exploring themes of identity through vivid colors, surreal imagery, and intricate soundscapes. Growing up in the world of film making, she became aware of the inevitable limitations interwoven into the industry. A profound understanding of this, she was determine to create works that amplify underrepresented voices. As she pursued higher education, she was inspired to tackle a more confrontational approach to worldwide issues, namely women's rights, a patriarchy infused with toxicity, and the queer experience in her filmography.
As a musician, she writes, sings, and produces original music, often blending her compositions seamlessly with her visual work. She brings these skills over in her DJ performances, curating a multicultural tapestry of traditional Indonesian themes, with an urban burst of house music. In her role as a visual artist, she experiments with 16mm film, designs zines laced with archival textures, and captures the raw authenticity of life's fleeting moments through her photography. A graduate of The New School's Screen Studies program, her work bridges tradition and modernity, challenging conventions and inviting audiences to view the world from transcending perspectives.
The fruition of Chandni's inspiration stems from the contrast of her vibrant cultural heritage in Indonesia, and the creative energy of her life in New York City.
